Was born June 25, 1816 in Hamilton County, Ohio;
his ancestors were among the pioneer Ohio families, moving there
from Pennsylvania in 1790. He was educated at Pleasant Ridge, Ohio, began
to study law in 1841, and was admitted to the bar in Cincinnati
in 1848. He practiced there two years, then moved to Kokomo, Howard
County, Indiana where he practiced until 1859.
He became a resident
of Oregon, Holt County, Missouri in spring of 1859. He was a Union man
through the Civil War and for 8 months was captain of a company
of militia, in service under Govenor Gamble's call for troops. He
was subsequently Lieutenant Colonel of militia. Lieutenant.
He was married March,
1838 to Mary CALVIN of Hamilton County, Ohio; he has four children
living. Previous to the war, he was a Democrat; he has since acted
with the Republican party. In November, 1876, he stood as the Republican
nominee and was elected representative from Holt Co. in the 29th
General Assembly where he has served with credit to the county.
