A leading farmer and stock dealer of Liberty
township, was born in Owen County, Indiana on May 9, 1835. His father
was George SHULTS and his mother's maiden name was Elmina BEAN.
In 1852 the family moved to Mo.; George SHULTS still lives on
the place of his first settlement some three miles east of Craig.
Christian SHULTS returned temporarily to Morgan County, Indiana and
there married Nancy Ellen NEWTON on June 14, 1855. He then returned
to Holt County and farmed near his father until 1859 on the farm
now occupied by Judge SKEELS.
During the Civil War, he served
three and a-half years in the Union Army, the first 6 months in
the state militia and the rest in the 4th Missouri Calvary, one
of ten regiments of reserve troops in Mo. He served in Missouri and
Kansas and participated in the skirmishes which marked the progress
of war in those states. His wife died February 4, 1865 while he was
yet in the army. He returned to his farm and lived on it until
the railroad was put through the county.
He purchased a tract of 160 acres on which he laid out the town
of Craig.
On December 1, 1868, he opened the first store established
in Craig. He sold goods, dealt in agricultural implements, ran
a grain business, and was involved in other enterprises until
February, 1872 when he sold his store and moved back to his farm.
He owns and farms 400 acres and trades in stock. He also has property
in Craig. He re-married on July 12, 1868 to Mollie BURKHART of
Morgan County, Indiana. He was a Democrat prior to the Civil War,
was a strong Union man during the rebellion, and has since been
a Republican.
