GEORGE BENNETT,

George Bennett, of the firm of Bennett & Demming, dealers in drugs, stationery, etc., is a son of George J. and Jane (McDonald) Bennett, who were residents of London when George was born, November 24, 1840. He was educated in London, and during the last year of his abode there was engaged in selling drugs.

In 1855, he came to America, landing at San Francisco, where he was employed at various branches of business, clerking, etc., till the beginning of the war of 1861, when he enlisted in Company C, Third California Volunteer Infantry. He remained in service for three years and three months, being mustered out as orderly sergeant. After his enlistment, his regiment was called to Utah Territory, where they were stationed during his time in service. Mr. Bennett remained in Salt Lake City one year after being mustered out, and then went to Montana, where he was engaged in clerking.

He subsequently came to Holt County, Missouri, where he was occupied in farming till 1879, when he came to Mound City, and embarked in his present business. He has acted as county assessor for three years, and as deputy for four years, in a very acceptable manner. Mr. Bennett was married July 13, 1869, to Miss Julia E. Demming, a daughter of Butler Demming, of Ohio. They have had six children, four of whom are living: George O., Guy, Clara and Ed. McCoy.
