Biographies

Mr. W. H. POYNTER

One of the substantial farmers of Forbes township, was born in Barren County, Kentucky on Dec. 27, 1824. His grandfather, William POYNTER, emigrated from North Carolina to Garrett County, KY near where the town of Stamford now stands. Mr. W. H. POYNTER'S father was James POYNTER and his mother's maiden name was Ruth ALDERSON. When he was age 2, the family moved to Hart County, KY where he was principally raised and educated in the common subscription schools.

On Jan. 13, 1850, he married Frances H. ASBURY of Green County, KY. He farmed in Hart County for 8 years, then moved to Holt County, Mo. He first rented land, then settled on the farm he now owns and occupies on Section 9, Township 59, Range 37 (about 3 miles north of Forbes). He has 150 acres of land with substantial improvements. His first wife died in 1862; he re-married in 1863 to Elizabeth VAUGHAN of Holt County She is the daughter of John VAUGHAN and was born in Rappahannock County, Virginia, and came to Holt County in 1854. Mr. POYNTER has 5 children.

He was originally a Whig, but now supports the Democrat party. On Feb. 4, 1864 he enlisted in the 9th Missouri Calvary in the Federal army and was orderly sergeant of Company C. He served in North Missouri and was mustered out July 13, 1865 after the war ended. He was once taken prisoner by the rebel Gen. Jeff. Thompson, but was shortly afterward paroled. He has since lived peaceably and comfortably on his farm.
