George W. GASKILL has resided in the vicinity of Craig since 1869. He was born in Greene County, Ohio on Feb. 17, 1834. His parents were
from New Jersey, and moved to Ohio in 1833. The family moved to Huntington County, Indiana in 1850. Mr. GASKILL received his
education in the common schools of Indiana and Ohio.
In 1861, he came for a short time to Linn County, Missouri, returned to Indiana,
and in September enlisted in 47th Indiana Volunteers for service in the Union Army. He was in the service for three years, and his
regiment was principally engaged along the Mississippi River and Gulf States. It was under the command of Grant until the capture of
Vicksburg and was then attached to the command of General Banks, belonging all the while to the 13th Army Corps.
Mr. GASKILL was
in the battles of Port Gibson, Champion Hill, the siege of Vicksburg, and other minor engagements. At the end of this service,
he returned to Indiana. On October 25, 1866 he married Miss S. C. Fast of Huntington County, born in Jefferson County, Ohio. He
farmed in Indiana until 1869 when he moved to Holt County, Missouri and settled a short distance east of Craig. He has been a member
of the Republican party. He has two children; Frances J. and George W.
